Former Red Hot Chili Pepper guitar player John Frusciante has been consistent with contributing guitar on the Mars Volta albums. How important has John been to your musical vision and guitar playing approach?
John is responsible for raising the bar as the musician that I want and in executing my music. He made me realize there are musicians like him, those who are a complete all rounded musician. John is very versed in the technical aspect, he knows all the intervals, and knows what you’re playing and why, but he is not limited to that only. He also has the emotional aspect. I’m a musician who is stuck in the emotional realm. A lot of musicians are stuck in the intellectual realm and some are stuck in the sexual realm, and then there are the musicians that are a complete body and not only of the head or a heart. John is that complete body. He understands the whole aspect of music. And so what this does for me is it liberates me, as I can come at him from whatever angle that occurs to me within my limited emotional state, where I can show him something and because of his level of intuition and professionalism, he can do it within minutes. And I’m very impatient when it comes to this sort of thing so I need this type of musician. I have to say that more important to all of this is, is our personal connection we have and our close friendship which started from a shared love of the cinema of Luis Buñuel and Werner Herzog, you know things that other people don’t usually like. So the most important thing is that he understands me as a human being.

Guitar Player: What picks and strings do you use?
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez: I like the orange Dunlop Tortex picks and I use Ernie Ball strings gauged .013 to .056 with a wound third.

Wow, is that why you don't use a lot of vibrato?
Maybe. I never realized my strings were so heavy until other guitar players were like "What the f**k are you doing?" When John Frusciante realized I had them he was amazed and kept asking me if I was really doing all those bends using those strings. But if I use lighter strings I really pull them out of tune because as I said I don't have a gentle touch - and that also affects my vibrato. Someone like John plays with a lot of finesse, so you can hear all those little things that he does with vibrato and everything, whereas my playing is sort of bulldozer-esque.

Speaking of Frusciante, what were his contributions to Octahedron?
Besides being a very close friend of mine who understands what I'm trying to do, John is another musician that I utilize to execute my compositions. What I look for in a musician is the ability to learn and memorize horribly fast, because I'm impatient. And they have to be able to do it without fear or reservations, and to play with all their heart and soul so that their personality comes through. In filmmaking terms, I'm the writer and director and the musicians are actors. They learn their lines and say them, and then we share the bigger story together.

In what ways has he influenced your playing?
He's the reason I don't have the affinity for the guitar that I should: because I know that I'm a phony. John's one of those people that I've always wanted to be. He picks up the thing and there's no separation between him and the guitar. Every single thing he plays has finesse and beauty to it. He's a natural, whereas for me it has come through a lot of playing and stubbornness, and thinking that the guitar and I are stuck with each other so we'd better make the best of it.

Mikor elhagytam a band�t, t�bb, mint egy �ve hat�rozatlan idej� sz�neten voltunk. Nem volt dr�ma vagy harag, �s nagyon meg�rt�ek voltak a t�bbiek. T�mogatj�k, hogy azt csin�ljam, ami boldogg� tesz �s ez mindk�t ir�nyban j� (bocsi, ezt nem igaz�n �rtettem itt este).

Leegyszer�s�tve, a zenei �rdekl�d�sem vezetett m�s ir�nyba. A zenekarba val� �jra bel�p�sem �s a band�ban elt�lt�tt id� folyam�n nagyon izgatott voltam azzal kapcsolatban, hogy milyen a zen�ben rejl� lehet�s�gek felfedez�se egy rock band�ban, k�l�n�sen azokkal az emberekkel. N�h�ny �ve �jra elkezdtem �rezni ugyanazt az izgalmat, de most ez m�sf�le zen�vel kapcsolatos, azzal, hogy egyed�l, a magam technikusa (f�n�ke?) legyek.

Nagyon szeretem a band�t, �s azt, amit csin�ltunk. Meg�rtem �s �rt�kelem, hogy a k�z�s munk�nk sokaknak rengeteget jelent, de a saj�t �rdekl�d�sem kell k�vetnem. Sz�momra a m�v�szet sohasem lesz olyan valami, ami k�teless�gtudatb�l j�n l�tre. Ez egy olyan valami, amit az�rt csin�lok, mert t�nyleg j� sz�rakoz�s, izgalmas �s �rdekes. Az ut�bbi 12 �v folyam�n emberileg �s m�v�szileg is megv�ltoztam, olyan fokig, hogy a zenekarral val� tov�bbi munk�m a saj�t term�szetem rov�s�ra menne. M�s v�laszt�s nem j�tszott szerepet ebben a d�nt�sben. Egyszer�en csak annak kell lennem, ami vagyok, �s azt kell tennem, amit tennem kell.
